XML - eXtensible Markup Language

Extensible Markup Language. The specifications were published in February 1998 by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), a standardization committee for Internet data formats such as HTML.

Until now, when exchanging data over a network, it was necessary to decide on the format and order in which to send the data. However, this causes problems in the Internet era when exchanging data with an unspecified number of people. So, the meaning of the data, known as a tag, is added to the data, and the other party defines how to treat the tag as their own data. Whereas the tags used in HTML are predefined, XML allows tags to be defined. Some computers have XML as their internal data format, but some convert the data into XML format before sending it.

Communication between computers using this data format, XML, is an important element technology. In December 2000, Microsoft announced a concept for network computing using XML called ".NET." When computers can communicate using XML, it will allow multiple computers to work together to complete a single task, and it will enable processing that would not be possible on a single computer, thus dramatically changing the very nature of computer processing. Network services that allow multiple computers to communicate with each other over the Internet in this way are called "web services," and are at the core of network computing. Sun Microsystems has also announced a similar concept using XML, which they call Sun One.

拡張可能マークアップ言語。HTMLなどインターネット上でのデータ形式の標準化委員会であるWWWコンソーシアム（W3C）が1998年2月に仕様を公開した。

　これまでネットワークを使ってデータをやりとりする場合、お互いにどのような形式や順番でデータを送信するのかということを決めておかなければならなかった。しかし、これではインターネット時代における不特定多数とのデータ交換に支障をきたす。そこでデータにタグとよばれるデータの意味を付け加え、相手はどのようなタグを自分のデータとしてどのように扱えばよいかを定義するというもの。HTMLで使われるタグはあらかじめ定義されているのに対し、XMLではタグの定義ができる。コンピュータの内部データ形式としてXMLでもつものもあるが、データを送信するときにXML形式に変換して送り出すものもある。

　このXMLというデータ形式を使ってコンピュータ間の通信をすることは重要な要素技術である。2000年12月にマイクロソフト社は「.NET」（ドット・ネット）というXMLを使ったネットワークコンピューティングの構想を発表した。XMLを使ってコンピュータ間が通信できるようになると、一つの仕事を複数のコンピュータが協調して処理できるようになったり、一つのコンピュータではできないような処理ができるようになるため、コンピュータを使った処理そのもののあり方を大きく変えてしまう。このようにインターネットを使って複数のコンピュータどうしが通信しあうネットワークサービスを「ウェブ・サービス」といい、ネットワークコンピューティングの中核になっている。XMLを使った同様な構想はサン・マイクロシステムズ社も発表しており、Sun One(サン・ワン)という名称でよんでいる。
