Tolima is the capital of the state of Tolima in central-western Colombia. It is located about 130 km west of the capital Bogota, on the eastern slope of the Central Mountain Range, at an altitude of about 1,300 m. It was founded in 1550. It became the country's capital for a short period in 1854. Since the 1890s, coffee cultivation has flourished on the Andean slopes above the city, and the city has developed rapidly. It is now the center of the surrounding agricultural region, and in addition to coffee, it distributes and processes cacao, tobacco, rice, sugarcane, etc. It is also known for its handmade leather products. The city is home to the University of Tolima (1954) and the Tolima Conservatory of Music. It is a key transportation point, and is the starting point of the railway to Bogota, as well as the main road that connects the Cauca River valley at the western foot of the Central Mountain Range with the Magdalena River valley at the eastern foot via the Quindío Pass. Population: 288,575 (1985).

コロンビア中西部,トリマ州の州都。首都ボゴタの西約 130km,アンデスの中部山脈東斜面にあり,標高約 1300m。 1550年建設。 1854年短期間ではあるが同国の首都となった。 1890年代以降市の上方のアンデス斜面でコーヒー栽培が盛んになってから急速に発展。現在周辺の農業地帯の中心地で,コーヒーのほか,カカオ,タバコ,米,サトウキビなどを集散,加工する。また手づくりの皮革製品でも知られる。市内にはトリマ大学 (1954) ,トリマ音楽院などがある。交通の要地で,ボゴタ方面への鉄道の起点であるほか,キンディオ峠を経て中部山脈西麓のカウカ川河谷と東麓のマグダレナ川河谷を結ぶ幹線道路が通る。人口 28万 8575 (1985) 。
