Since the 4th century, a procession has been held on this day (the first day of Holy Week) to celebrate the entry of Christ into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-10, Luke 19:29-40, John 12:12-19). Participants carry palm or olive branches or other greenery. Artistic representations of the Entry into Jerusalem date back to the early Christian period (such as the sarcophagus of Junius Bassus), and detailed, narrative depictions of the event are found in works by 14th-century Italian Duccio (back panel of the Maestà). …
