Gegenschein is a vague, roughly elliptical patch of light that can be seen on the ecliptic, exactly opposite the sun, at midnight. Like the zodiacal light that appears after sunset and before sunrise, it is thought to be sunlight reflected by a cluster of tiny cosmic dust particles, but it is much fainter and therefore more difficult to observe.
