Karkinos

...The reason why cancer is called "cancer" in English is probably because the affected area is rough and resembles a crab's shell. In Greek mythology, the crab appears as Karkinos, an animal that aided Hercules in his fight with the water snake Hydra (a symbol of drought) and pinched the hero's heel. The crab was killed by the hero, but Hera, who hated Hercules, took it to the heavens and made it the constellation Cancer.
