...The buildings of the villa consisted of a living area for the master and an area for managing the estate, the latter of which contained large wine presses, olive presses, wine breweries, and threshing floors. Some villas also had rooms (ergastulum) for keeping rebellious slaves, and slave shackles have also been discovered. From these findings, it is assumed that the estate management centered around the villa involved the mass production of wine, olive oil, and other products using the collective labor of slaves, and the villas are important sources for understanding the nature of slavery in large Roman landowners....

…ウィラの建物は，主人の居住用の部分と所領経営のための部分とからなり，後者には大きなブドウ搾り器，オリーブ搾り器，ブドウ酒醸造場，脱穀場などがあった。また反抗的な奴隷を入れておく部屋(エルガストゥルムergastulum)を持ったウィラもあり，奴隷用のかせも発見されている。これらのことから見て，ウィラを中心としておこなわれた所領経営は，奴隷の集団労働を使ってブドウ酒やオリーブ油などの商品を大量に生産するものであったと推定され，ローマの大土地所有における奴隷制のあり方を知る上で重要な資料となっている。…
