A province in central China, south of Lake Dongting. Its abbreviated name is Xiang. Its capital is Changsha. Industries such as spinning, machinery, smelting, and chemicals are developing, centered around Changsha, Changde, and Hengyang. Transportation is provided by water transport via Dongting Lake and the Xiang River, three railway lines (Beijing-Guangzhou), Zhejiang (Hangzhou-Zhuzhou), and Xianggui (Hengyang-Youyi Pass), as well as numerous motorways. The ethnic minorities Miao, Zhuang, and Dong live in the southwestern mountainous area, while the Yao live in the southern mountainous area. Shaoshan, the birthplace of Mao Zedong, is located almost in the center of the province. Area: 211,700 km2 .
