Sanko [village] - Sanko
A village in Shimoge County in northwestern Oita Prefecture. Population 5,663 (1995). It borders Nakatsu City to the north, Usa City to the east, and Fukuoka Prefecture to the west. The northern part is covered by alluvial plains of the Yamakuni River, which flows north along the prefectural border, and the main tributary of the Inumaru River, which runs through the center, while the southern part is dominated by mountainous land centered around the mesa-shaped Mt. Hachimen (659m). The main industry is agriculture, with rice, wheat, vegetables, tobacco, fruit, and other crops grown. There is a campsite and a peace park at the northern foot of Mt. Hachimen.
