An ancient Italian mountain people of Osco-Umbrian descent who came down from the mountains around 500 BC and settled in cities around the Liri River. They allied with the Aequi, a people of similar descent, and threatened the indigenous cities, leading to an alliance between the Latins and the city of Rome (the Treaty of Cassius), which can be said to have prepared the way for the unification of Latium by Rome. After the annihilation of the Aequi, they were forced to gradually retreat, and in the Latin League War they joined the league, only to be defeated (338 BC), after which they were absorbed into the Roman state.
