[1] 〘Noun〙① Buddhist term. From the Buddhist perspective, refers to teachings other than Buddhism. External arts. Hereticism. ⇔ Internal law. ※Konjaku (around 1120) 4: “Because external teachings were of no use, he became a monk and learned and passed on internal teachings.” [Ninja vākāvatāka sutra, 9] ② A kind of sorcery performed by monks who called Tengu “External Law Master” and regarded him as their founder. ※Heike (before the 13th century) 1: “Because they wanted to drive out the saint who practiced external teachings . ” ③ A contraction of “Gehō atama” (head of external law). ※Zappai, Yanagi Taru-13 (1778): “He said he was Gehōme.” ④ A contraction of “Gehō geta” (clogs used in external law). ※Miscellaneous haiku, Yanagi Taru Shui (1801), volume 20, “The popular uphill slope of Ashitageho ” [2] (from the fact that Fukurokuju ’s head is a gaiho head) Another name for Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. ※Haiku, Takema Kyoginshu (1499), volume 5, “In old age, the end is the downfall, if you let go, the god of gaiho will be shira-ga-yama” [Etymology] (Regarding (1) ①②) The ancient mountain asceticism was called the law of heresy in comparison to temple Buddhism, and in particular, in relation to the incantations linked to Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, tengu and Inari foxes were called gaiho-sama.

[1] 〘名〙① 仏語。仏法以外の教法を、仏教の側からいう。外術。外道。⇔内法。※今昔(1120頃か)四「外法は益(かひ)无とて、〈略〉出家し給て、内法を習ひ伝へて」 〔入楞伽経‐九〕② 天狗を外法様(げほうさま)と呼んで、それを祖とした僧衆による一種の妖術(ようじゅつ)。※平家(13C前)一「彼(か)の外法行ひける聖(ひじり)を追出せむとしければ」③ 「げほうあたま(外法頭)」の略。※雑俳・柳多留‐一三(1778)「げほうめと申ましたとざんをする」④ 「げほうげた(外法下駄)」の略。※雑俳・柳多留拾遺(1801)巻二〇「よく売れるあしたげほうの上(のぼ)り坂」[2] (福祿寿(ふくろくじゅ)の頭が外法頭であるところから) 七福神の一人、福祿寿の異称。※俳諧・竹馬狂吟集(1499)五「老の末こそくだりざかなれ はなちれば外法の神もしらが山」[語誌]((一)①②について) 古来からの山岳修験道などを、寺院仏教に対して外道の法と称し、特に、真言密教と結びついた呪法に関連して、天狗や稲荷の狐などを外法様と称した。

そと‐のり【外法】

〘名〙 物の外側をはかった長さ。容器などの、縦・横・高さ・直径などを、その厚さを加えてはかった寸法。〔書言字考節用集(1717)〕
