Japanese: 暖冬害 - だんとうがい

This damage occurs when winter is abnormally warm in an area that should be cold, and is mainly used as an agricultural meteorological term. Agricultural crops are grown in the right places based on long experience, so abnormally cold or warm winters are not suitable for crop growth. In particular, when an abnormally warm winter causes excessive growth during the winter and then the cold winter returns, the crops lose their cold resistance and are more susceptible to frost and cold damage. This is common in wheat and fruit trees. In addition to agricultural crops, products that improve in quality in severe cold, such as sake, pickles, and agar, are also susceptible to warm winter damage.

寒いはずの冬が異常に暖かいために生ずる害で，主として農業気象用語として用いられる。農作物は永い経験から適地適作がなされているので，異常寒冬であっても異常暖冬であっても作物の生育に適さない。特に異常暖冬で冬の間に生育が進みすぎたあとで寒冬が戻ってくると，作物の耐寒性が失われているため，霜害･寒害を受ける度合が強くなる。ムギや果樹に多い。農作物以外にも酒，漬物，寒天などきびしい寒さによって品質がよくなるものは暖冬害を受ける。
