After becoming a monk at the age of 16, he studied Nembutsu, Tendai, Kusha, Zen and Vinaya, and in 1236 (Kasei 2) became a disciple of Ben'a Bencho of the Jodo sect's Chinzei-gi. He then made an effort to spread the Jodo sect in the eastern provinces, and entered Kamakura with the help of Daibutsu Kanjin Sho Joko, and after gaining the devout support of Daibutsu Chocho, he founded Goshin-ji Temple (later Komyo-ji Temple). He adopted a compromising stance, aiming for official recognition of the Jodo sect under the exoteric and esoteric system.
