The poll tax of ancient Rome. During the Republic, the existence of the poll tax is known only in some provinces, such as Africa, but during the Imperial period, it was probably collected in most provinces. However, during the first half of the Empire, the scope of residents subject to taxation and the amount of taxation were unclear except for a few provinces, and there are likely to have been considerable differences between regions. The contents of the capitatio under the tax system reorganized by Diocletian around 300 (the capitatio-jugatio system) are relatively well known.
