A system of development, settlement, and governance that existed during the Portuguese maritime expansion and colonial period in Brazil, and also as an administrative unit. It was first applied to the Madeira, Azores, and Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, discovered in the 15th century, and the first example after the discovery of Brazil (1500) was the grant of the island of São João to Ferdinand Noronha in 1504. Between 1534 and 1536, the colony of Brazil was divided into 15 hereditary capitanias, which were given to 12 hereditary lords called donatários or governadors.
