"Film Theory on Mount Etna" - Etona Sanjo no Eiga-ron

… At a time when French cinema, which had once dominated the world market, was being overwhelmed by Hollywood films after World War I, Louis Delluc (1890-1924), one of France's most pioneering filmmakers, described the essence of film as "photogénie" and even published a book titled "Photogénie" (1920). "Photogénie" has been said to be an indefinable "magic word," but Jean Epstein, a director and theorist who looked up to Delluc as his mentor, defined photogénie in his book "Cinematography on Mount Etna" (1926) as "what color is to painting, or volume to sculpture, that is, an inherent element of that art," while film critic and theorist Léon Moussinac (1890-1964) defined the essence of photogénie as "visual rhythm." Representative works that realize the aesthetics of photogeny include "Festival of Spain" (1919), directed by Germaine Dulac and based on a screenplay by Delluc, "Frenzy" (1921), also written and directed by Delluc, and "The White Rose of the Railroad" (1923), directed by Abel Gance.
