1839‐1917 British ceramicist. Born in London. Aiming to be a painter, he studied at the Royal Academy School, but after discovering W. Morris, he switched to crafts. He mainly produced pottery in his own kiln, and in the early 1870s he revived and developed the lusterware technique. His style imitates Islamic pottery, making extensive use of vibrant green and purple glazes. He designed and produced tiles and stained glass at the request of Morris & Co.
