A city in central Kagoshima Prefecture. Incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the coast of Kagoshima Bay on the Osumi Peninsula and borders Sakurajima. Most of the area is whitebait plateau, and early-season cultivation of fruit trees such as loquats and ponkan oranges, and vegetables such as snow peas is popular.
