A city in central Kagoshima Prefecture. Incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the coast of Kagoshima Bay on the Osumi Peninsula and borders Sakurajima. Most of the area is whitebait plateau, and early-season cultivation of fruit trees such as loquats and ponkan oranges, and vegetables such as snow peas is popular. 鹿児島県中部の市。1958年市制。大隅半島の鹿児島湾岸を占め,桜島に接する。大半はシラス台地で,ビワ,ポンカンなどの果樹とキヌサヤエンドウなどの野菜の早期栽培が盛ん。ハマチ,クルマエビの養殖も行われる。海潟(かいがた)温泉がある。162.12km2。1万7248人(2010)。
