An evergreen tree of the family Barringtaceae, native to the tropical regions of northern South America. It grows to a height of 20-30m, with a trunk that can reach a diameter of 50-80cm. The leaves are large and oval, and grow alternately at the ends of the branches. The flowers are so-called trunk-grown flowers, and a 20-50cm long inflorescence (branch) grows from the thick trunk, with numerous yellow-orange flowers at the end of the inflorescence, each about 10cm in diameter. There are six petals, and six outer sepals. The bases of both the petals and the stamens are fleshy and thick. After flowering, a hard, spherical fruit about 20cm in diameter hangs directly from the trunk. This appearance resembles a cannonball, hence the English name Cannonball Tree, which is translated into Japanese as Hougamboku or Hougannoki. It is planted in botanical gardens throughout the tropics. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
