Edna C - Edna

In 1791, the plant was named dahlia in honor of the botanist Anders Dahl (1751-89). Since then, over the course of two centuries, the original species, which had only a few petals on a thin stem, has evolved into today's representative horticultural varieties, such as Edna C, which has over 400 petals, and Emory Paul, which has a huge flower with a diameter of 40 cm on a walking stick-like flower stem. Most wild species of the genus Dahlia are autotetraploids with 2 n = 32 chromosomes, but due to crossbreeding of different lineages and an increase in the number of chromosomes, today's horticultural varieties are allooctoploids with 2 n = 64 chromosomes, which is the reason for the innumerable horticultural varieties with a wide variety of flower shapes, colors, and sizes today.
