In the broad sense, it refers to carbides, but is commonly known as calcium carbide (CaC2 ₎ . Also known as calcium carbide. Specific gravity 2.22, melting point 2300℃. Pure form is a colorless crystal. Usually it is gray-black due to impurities. It reacts with water to produce acetylene. When reacted with nitrogen at high temperatures, it becomes calcium cyanamide. It is used in the organic chemical industry as a raw material for acetylene, and is also important as a raw material for lime nitrogen. It is made by heating calcium oxide (quicklime) and carbon in an electric furnace to about 2000℃.

広義には炭化物をいうが，一般には炭化カルシウムCaC₂の俗称。カルシウムカーバイドとも。比重2.22，融点2300℃。純粋なものは無色の結晶。通常不純物のため灰黒色を呈する。水と反応してアセチレンを生ずる。高温で窒素を作用させるとカルシウムシアナミドとなる。アセチレン原料として有機化学工業に用いられ，また石灰窒素原料として重要。酸化カルシウム（生石灰）と炭素とを電気炉中約2000℃に熱してつくる。
