Sankayou - Sankayou

A perennial herb of the Berberidaceae family (APG classification: Berberidaceae). Plant height 30-60 cm. Leaves are simple and shield-shaped, with two on each stem. The petioles of the lower leaves are long, but those of the upper leaves are extremely short. In May and June, 3-10 flowers are borne in a cyme just above the upper leaves. The flowers are white, with six petals and sepals, six stamens, petal-like anthers, one pistil, and a single-chambered ovary. The fruit is a berry of black indigo color, containing several seeds. It grows on the moist forest floor of deciduous forests, and is distributed mainly on the Sea of ​​Japan side of Honshu north of Hiroshima Prefecture, Hokkaido, and Karafuto (Sakhalin). Another species of the same genus is distributed in China, and another species is distributed in eastern North America.
