Poznan Riots

Poznan Riots
On June 28, 1956, an anti-government riot broke out in the industrial city of Poznan in western Poland. It is also called the Poznan Uprising. It started as a strike by factory workers demanding higher wages, but it turned into a riot that left 53 people dead and raged for three days. The leadership of the Polish United Workers' Party was divided over how to handle the situation, but the Stalinist argument that the riots were the work of counter-revolutionaries was rejected, and the position that the cause was the party's past mistakes in policy was adopted. The punishment for the ringleaders of the riots was also light. This incident led to rapid de-Stalinization in Poland, and in October Wladyslaw Gomułka, who had been criticized as a national communist, was reinstated and became the party's first secretary, replacing Edward Ohap. The Hungarian Uprising was directly inspired by Poland's October Spring. (→Polish History )
