Cap-Haïtian (English spelling)
A city in the central West Indies, in northern Haiti. It is called Le Cap by locals. It is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean, and the second largest city in Haiti. It was founded by the French in 1670. It was called Cap-Français and was the capital of the French colony of Saint-Domingue until 1770. It is known as the site of a slave revolt in 1791 and a battle between the colonists and the French army in 1802. Many of the old buildings were destroyed by the earthquake in 1842 and the hurricane in 1928. It is the center of the surrounding agricultural region, and distributes bananas, pineapples, sugar cane, coffee, and cacao. There are many tourists in the surrounding area, such as the Sans Souci Palace and the ruins of La Ferrière Fort (→Lamières National Historic Park). It is about 140 km north of the capital Port-au-Prince, and is connected by road and air. Population 111,094 (2003).
