Western-style painter. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Meiji Gakuin Junior High School in 1930 (Showa 5). Started oil painting while attending the school, and after graduation studied at Pacific Art School, where he began to paint in earnest. There he also met Matsumoto Shunsuke and Terada Masaaki (1912-1989). In 1936 he participated in the formation of the Ecole de Tokyo exhibition, which brought together many artists of his generation. In 1938 he traveled to Europe and toured around the country. In 1939 he participated in the founding of the Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai (Art and Culture Association) led by Fukuzawa Ichiro, and in 1943 he formed the Shinjingakai (New Artist Association) with Matsumoto, Terada and others. He continued to exhibit his work even as the war situation intensified during World War II. After World War II, he was a member of the Jiyu Bijutsuka Kyokai (Free Artists Association) from 1947 to 1964 (Showa 22-39), and from 1959 he served as a professor at Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University) until 1981, when he became a professor emeritus. He received the Excellence Award at the 5th Japan International Art Exhibition in 1959, and the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize in 1963. Since the end of World War II, he has consistently pursued various images of modern humanity within his thickly painted canvases. Major retrospectives of his work were held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 1979, and at the Museum of Modern Art, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1994. His representative works include the "Red Sky" series and "People."
