Lake Magadi (English spelling)

Japanese: マガディ[湖]（英語表記）Lake Magadi

A salt lake in southwestern Kenya, eastern Africa. It has an area of about 100 km2. It is located about 80 km southwest of the capital, Nairobi, in the Great Rift Valley of Africa. Natural soda is mined here, and reserves are said to be between 100 and 200 million tons. The soda ash (sodium carbonate) obtained by refining the natural soda here is called Magadi ash, and was once exported in large quantities to Japan during the Taisho era. The town of Magadi is on the eastern bank. [Uchiyama Masakuni]
