One hundred times pilgrimage - Hyakudo Mairi

Japanese:
One hundred times pilgrimage - Hyakudo Mairi

A type of incantation to pray to the gods and Buddhas. It involves making a hundred pilgrimages to a particular shrine or temple to pray. The form of the prayer becomes so complex that the emotions involved become painful. Not satisfied with a single visit, people will make pilgrimages a hundred or even a thousand times. The Ohyakudo Stone simplifies this form. This is a stone located a certain distance from the worship hall in the precincts of a shrine or temple. After praying once, you return to the stone and pray again. This action is repeated a hundred times. This is commonly called stepping on the stone a hundred times. There is a counting system to ensure that the number of times is not mistaken. In simple versions, about a hundred small stones or twigs are prepared and one is placed each time one prays. A bamboo spatula is also prepared in front of the altar, and an abacus-shaped object is placed on the wall of the Ohyakudo Stone. The act of praying for days to have the gods and Buddhas hear one's prayers is condensed into a round trip between the altar and the Ohyakudo Stone. However, because the story is based on the heartfelt wishes of the people, a legend spread that if the wish is exposed to public view, the wish will not come true.
