The word fraternity, from the Latin fraternitas, was used from around the 12th century, and the more secularized word philanthropy (philanthropic love, love of humanity) was used as a translation of the Greek or Latin philanthrōpia from the 17th century onwards. Among the words meaning “to love” in ancient Greece, philein meant the considerate love of gods towards humans and of friends towards friends of friends.
