Keijiro Aso

Agricultural chemist. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from the College of Agriculture of Tokyo Imperial University in 1899 (Meiji 32) and majored in plant physiological chemistry at graduate school. In 1912 (Meiji 45), he became a professor at his alma mater. With plant physiological chemistry as the basis of his research, he was active as a pioneer in soil and fertilizer science in Japan. He conducted pioneering research on trace elements, particularly manganese, and put into practice the use of root nodule bacteria in the cultivation of legume crops, contributing to increased production of beans and green manure. He also devoted himself to the establishment of agricultural research and education institutions, including Tokyo University of Agriculture. He became a member of the Imperial Academy in 1938 (Showa 13). He served as president of the Agricultural Chemistry Society of Japan and president of the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition.

農芸化学者。東京に生まれ、1899年（明治32）東京帝国大学農科大学を卒業、大学院で植物生理化学を専攻した。1912年（明治45）母校の教授。研究の基礎に植物生理化学を置いて、日本の土壌肥料学の草分けとして活躍。微量要素、とくにマンガンについて先駆的研究を行い、またマメ科作物の栽培に根粒(こんりゅう)細菌を利用することを実行し、マメ、緑肥の増産に貢献した。東京農業大学はじめ農業研究教育機関の設置にも力を注いだ。1938年（昭和13）帝国学士院会員。日本農芸化学会会長、土壌肥料学会会長などを歴任した。
