Verbena - Verbena

It is a semi-hardy perennial plant of the Verbenaceae family (APG classification: Verbenaceae), but in horticulture it is treated as an annual plant sown in autumn and spring. It is native to the subtropics and Central and South America. It is also called Bijo-zakura (beautiful woman cherry blossom) because the flowers resemble cherry blossoms, but the name Bijo-zakura is actually given to the parent species, V. phlogiflora Cham., and is confusingly similar. The flowers come in a wide variety of colors, including solid colors and pure white spots. The flowering season is long, from spring to autumn, and it can be enjoyed in flower beds and potted plants. It is also often used in hanging pots.

It is relatively easy to cultivate, but since the seed coat contains a substance that inhibits germination, it will germinate well if the seeds are washed thoroughly with water before sowing and then stored in a refrigerator at 7-8°C for about 10 days. The germination temperature is around 20°C, and it prefers a sunny, well-ventilated, and well-drained environment. It also reproduces well by cuttings. Be careful of spider mites during hot, dry periods.

クマツヅラ科（APG分類：クマツヅラ科）の半耐寒性多年草であるが、園芸上は秋・春播(ま)き一年草として扱う。亜熱帯、中南米原産。花容がサクラの花に似ることから、ビジョザクラ（美女桜）ともいうが、ビジョザクラの名は本来は母種であるフロギフロラ種V. phlogiflora Cham.につけられたもので、紛らわしい。花色は豊富で、各色の単色、および純白色の斑(ふ)のあるものなどがある。開花期は春から秋と長く、花壇や鉢植えなどで観賞する。吊(つ)り鉢にも多く利用する。

　栽培は比較的容易であるが、発芽抑制物質が種皮にあるので、播種(はしゅ)するときに種子をよく水洗いし、7～8℃の冷蔵庫内で10日くらい処理すると、よく発芽する。発芽温度は20℃前後で、日当り、通風、排水のよい環境を好む。挿芽でもよく繁殖する。高温・乾燥の時期は、ハダニの発生に注意する。
