Year of birth: 1160
Dazai Shoni in the early Kamakura period. Shugo of Chikuzen, Buzen, Hizen, and Tsushima. Son of Yorihira. Kojiro, Chikugo no Kami. The Muto clan was a samurai family whose main base was in Musashi Province, and initially served as a retainer of the Taira clan, but later became a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo. In January 1191 (Kenkyu 2), together with Taira Moritoki, he inspected the confiscated Taira territories of Ise and Shima provinces. In 1193, he traveled to Kyushu and served as magistrate of Chinzei in place of Amano Tokage, but in 1226 (Karoku 2), he was appointed Dazai Shoni, and using this authority, he exercised governing power over all of Kyushu. 鎌倉初期の大宰少弐。筑前,豊前,肥前,対馬各国守護。頼平の子。小次郎,筑後守。武藤氏は武蔵国を本貫地とする武士で,初めは平氏の家人であったが,のちに源頼朝の家人となり,建久2(1191)年1月には平盛時と共に伊勢,志摩両国の平家没官領を巡検している。6年に九州に下向し,天野遠景に代わって鎮西を奉行していたが,嘉禄2(1226)年に大宰少弐に任ぜられ,その権限を利用して,全九州におよぶ統治権を行使した。法名覚仏。<参考文献>佐藤進一『鎌倉幕府訴訟制度の研究』,川添昭二『九州中世史の研究』
