Furnivall, but the driving force behind it was James Augustus Henry Murray (1837-1915). He became editor-in-chief in 1879, published the first volume in 1884, and the final volume, volume 12, in 1928. …

…His argument eventually bore fruit as “A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles.” However, there were many obstacles to the realization of this dictionary, and it was not until 1884 that James Augustus Henry Murray (1837-1915) became the editor-in-chief and published the first volume. Three other editors were added, and it was not until 1928, 44 years later, that the main volume was completed. In 1933, 12 volumes of the main text and one volume of supplements were added, and it has become the unshakable position as the “Oxford English Dictionary” (OED). …
