In 1179, the two-thirds majority system was established. In 1274, at the Council of Lyon, Pope Gregory X established a system of confining the electors to a sealed chamber (conclave) to prevent outside interference and delay in the voting process, and since then the term conclave has become synonymous with the college of cardinals electing the pope.
