A port town on the Mediterranean coast of Palestine. Hebrew name Yafo. It is an ancient port town whose name appears in Egyptian documents from the 14th century BC, and it flourished as the closest sea gateway to Jerusalem. Medieval Muslim geographical books also record merchants from all over the country gathering there as a walled port town. During the Crusades, it was a target of both sides' attacks. Since the late 19th century, it has been one of the landing points for Jews migrating to Palestine, and the Jews built the Jewish city of Tel Aviv on the sand dunes to the north.
