In the tropical monsoon zone stretching from eastern India to mainland Southeast Asia, taro and yams were domesticated from ancient times, while in the tropical forest zone stretching from Malaysia to Oceania, bananas, breadfruit, coconut palms, sago palms, sugarcane, and other crops were domesticated. These crops are called vegetatively propagated crops (root crops) because they are propagated not by seeds but by root division, cutting, or cuttings, and the agricultural culture in which they are cultivated as the main crop is called root crop agricultural culture. In this agricultural culture, which originally originated in tropical forest zones, the basic agricultural method is slash-and-burn, in which the forest is cut down and burned, crops are grown for about one to three years, and then the land is abandoned. …

 インド東部から東南アジア大陸部にかける熱帯モンスーン地帯では,きわめて古い時代にタロイモやヤムイモなどが栽培化され,マレーシアからオセアニアに至る熱帯森林地帯では,バナナ,パンノキ,ココヤシ,サゴヤシ,サトウキビなどが栽培化された。これらの作物は,いずれも種子によらず,根分け,株分け,挿芽などによって繁殖するため栄養繁殖作物(根栽作物)とよばれ,それを主作物として栽培する農耕文化を根栽農耕文化とよぶ。もともと熱帯の森林地帯に起源したこの農耕文化では,森林を伐採・火入れして1~3年間ほど作物をつくり,そのあと耕地を放棄する焼畑が基本的な農耕方式になっている。…
