These are the provincial laws of the Sagara clan, a feudal lord who ruled over the three counties of Kuma, Ashikita, and Yatsushiro in Higo Province during the Sengoku period. They consist of the Tameshige Law (7 articles) dated April 22, 1493 (Meio 2), the Nagamai Law (13 articles) whose date of enactment is unknown, and the Haruhiro Law (22 articles) dated February 7, 1555 (Koji 1), the validity of which was reaffirmed by Haruhiro in May 1549 (Tenbun 18). The laws of the Sagara clan during this period were either enacted by the Sagara clan itself or drafted by the Gunchuso, an alliance of small feudal lords from each of the three counties under the Sagara clan's control, with the approval of their master, the Sagara clan. It is assumed that the Haruhiro Law belongs to the former category, and the Tameshige and Nagamai Laws to the latter. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
