...An industrial city in the western part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Transcaucasus. Population: 282,200 (1991). It was named Gyandzha (before 1804 and 1918-35), Elizavetpol' (1804-1918), and in 1935 it was renamed Kirovabad (Abad means "city" in Persian) after the revolutionary SM Kirov. It was renamed to its current name in 1989. It was founded in the 5th or 6th century, and flourished as the commercial and cultural center of the region in the 12th and 13th centuries. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Gandzha" are listed below.
