Arata Osada

Educational scholar. Born in Nagano Prefecture. Graduated from Hiroshima Higher Normal School in 1910 (Meiji 43). After graduating from the Department of Philosophy at Kyoto Imperial University in 1915 (Taisho 4), he participated in the New Education Movement under Sawayanagi Masataro and conducted empirical research on education. He then became a professor at Hiroshima Higher Normal School, and then a professor at Hiroshima University of Literature and Science, and then its president. He began studying Pestalozzi from the perspective of educational philosophy and new education, and achieved many accomplishments. In 1941 (Showa 16), he was awarded the Pestalozzi Prize by the Swiss government. After the war, he contributed to the peace movement by serving as president of the Japan Society for the Study of Education and a member of the Science Council of Japan, as well as editing the collection of essays "Children of the Atomic Bomb" based on his experience of the Hiroshima atomic bombing and serving as president of the "Japan Association for the Protection of Children." His major works include "Pedagogy" (1933) and "The Life of Pestalozzi" Vol. 1 and 2 (1952).

教育学者。長野県に生まれる。1910年（明治43）広島高等師範学校卒業。1915年（大正4）京都帝国大学哲学科卒業後、沢柳政太郎(さわやなぎまさたろう)のもとで新教育運動に参加し、教育の実証的実験研究を行う。その後、広島高等師範学校教授を経て、広島文理科大学教授、同学長となる。教育哲学、新教育の研究のなかからペスタロッチ研究を開始し、数多くの業績を残した。1941年（昭和16）スイス政府からペスタロッチ賞を授与される。戦後は、日本教育学会会長、日本学術会議会員を務めるかたわら、広島の被爆体験から文集『原爆の子』を編集し、「日本子どもを守る会」会長に任ずるなど、平和運動に貢献した。主著に『教育学』（1933）、『ペスタロッチー伝』上下（1952）がある。
