...In southern Italy, the dynamic and uniquely rhythmic Beneventan typeface developed, and spread to Dalmatia, centering on the Monte Cassino monastery workshop, and flourished until around the 13th century. In the Carolingian dynasty under Charlemagne, the regular, balanced and clear Carolingian minuscule was used as part of the policy of revival of antiquity (Godescalc Gospel, late 8th century, etc.), and by around 800 it had rapidly spread to the workshops of the empire. However, at the end of the 12th century, calligraphy moved towards a rigid style, and the so-called black letter (German typeface) or Gothic typeface was born. ...
