The oldest city in ancient Latium, located 19 km southeast of Rome, Italy, near the present-day Castel Gandolfo. Today, Albano. It is said to have been founded in the 12th century BC by Ascanius, the son of Aeneas. At one time it was the leader of the Latin League, but was destroyed by Rome around 600 BC.
