It is an old town in Aso District, in the northeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies the northwestern part of the Aso Volcano, and the crater plain (Aso Valley), through which the Hohi Main Line runs, spreads out in the center. It belongs to Aso-Kuju National Park, and its center is the hot spring village of Uchinomaki, where Aso Uchinomaki Onsen (a gypsum spring with a temperature of 40-55°C) overlooks the Kurokawa River. In addition to cultivating rice, vegetables, and flowers, livestock farming such as beef and dairy cattle is also thriving. In February 2005, it merged with Ichinomiya Town and Namino Village in Aso District to become a city, forming Aso City. 199.36 km2 . 18,714 people (2003). → Mt. Aso
