A temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Daitoku-ji school, located in Takigi, Kyotanabe City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is known as Ikkyu-ji, and is also called Takigi Ikkyu-ji, Myosho-ji, and Takigi-ji. The mountain name is Ryozuisan. Myosho-ji was founded by Zetsuruga Sotaku during the Shoo era (1288-93), and Nanpo Jomyo was invited to become its founder. The temple complex was burned down during the Genko era (1331-34) by war and reduced to ashes, but was later rebuilt in 1456 (Kousho 2) by Ikkyu Sojun, who admired Jomyo's style. Eventually, Ikkyu built a hermitage here, which he named Shuon-an, and lived in seclusion. After his death, Ikkyu was buried in a tower within the temple by his disciples. The main hall (a National Important Cultural Property) is small, but was built in 1506 (Eisho 3) and is rich in variety in its Chinese style. Temple treasures include a wooden statue and portrait of Zen master Ikkyu, which, along with Emperor Gohanazono's letter to his wife, are National Important Cultural Properties. In addition, the abbot's chamber, Karamon gate, and kuri (kitchen quarters) are also designated as National Important Cultural Properties, and the dry landscape abbot's chamber garden and tiger's hill garden are designated as National Places of Scenic Beauty.
