… The period between the two world wars was marked by the storm of fascism, and the growing resistance movement against it was reflected in literature. Famous poets include Milev (September), Hristo Smirnenski (Come Daylight) (1922), Nikola Jonkov Vapcarov (1909-1942) (The Proletarian Trio), and Elisaveta Bagrjana (1893- ), who sang about women seeking freedom. Among novels, such notable works include Strasimirov's Duet (1926), which depicts fascist brutality, Stoyanov's anti-war novel Cholera, Georgi Slavov Karaslavov's (1904-80) The Bride (1942), which depicts conflicts in rural areas, the short stories of Angel Ivanov Karalijčev (1902-72), and the works of the satirist Minkoff.
