A method of determining the age of rocks by measuring the amount of 40Ar produced from the radioactive potassium isotope 40K . It is effective for dating rocks dating back tens of thousands of years. Of the three isotopes of potassium ( 39K , 40K , 41K ), 40K decays into 40Ar and 40Ca (calcium-40). The decay constants are λ e = 0.581× 10−10 /year and λ β = 4.962× 10−10 /year, respectively.
