A method of determining the age of rocks by measuring the amount of ^40Ar produced from the radioactive potassium isotope ^40K . It is effective for dating rocks dating back tens of thousands of years. Of the three isotopes of potassium ( ^39K , ^40K , ^41K ), ^40K decays into ^40Ar and ^40Ca (calcium-40). The decay constants are λ _e = 0.581× ¹⁰⁻¹⁰ /year and λ _β = 4.962× ¹⁰⁻¹⁰ /year, respectively. If the number of ^40K and ^40Ar atoms in a rock is known, the age of the rock can be given by:
