Ascension [island] - Ascension
An isolated island of volcanic origin in the central South Atlantic. It is a British territory and administratively belongs to St. Helena. It was named after the island that was discovered on Ascension Day in 1501. It is famous for its sea turtles, rabbits, and other birds and animals. It is home to a US missile and satellite tracking base. Area: 88 km2 . Population: 1,050 (1999).
