Gilliéron, Jules Louis
Born: December 21, 1854, Neuveville
[Died] April 26, 1926. Born in Schellnerz, Switzerland. French linguistic geographer. Studied at the École des Hautes Scientifiques in France, and taught Romance dialectology at the school from 1883. Together with JP Rousselot, he wrote the Revue des patois gallo-romans (1887-92), and in 1893 founded the Society of French Dialectology. From 1897, with the help of E. Edmond, he conducted linguistic surveys mainly in France, and published the Atlas of the French Language and the Supplement to Corsica (4 volumes, 1914-15), thus establishing the field of linguistic geography. His other works include The genealogy of the word for "bee" (18) and Pathology and therapy of verbal language (21).
