[Died] April 26, 1926. Born in Schellnerz, Switzerland. French linguistic geographer. Studied at the École des Hautes Scientifiques in France, and taught Romance dialectology at the school from 1883. Together with JP Rousselot, he wrote the Revue des patois gallo-romans (1887-92), and in 1893 founded the Society of French Dialectology. From 1897, with the help of E. Edmond, he conducted linguistic surveys mainly in France, and published the Atlas of the French Language and the Supplement to Corsica (4 volumes, 1914-15), thus establishing the field of linguistic geography. His other works include The genealogy of the word for "bee" (18) and Pathology and therapy of verbal language (21).

スイス生れのフランスの言語地理学者。フランスの高等学術研究院に学び，1883年から同校のロマンス語方言学の講座を担当。 J.P.ルスロとともに『ガロ・ロマン方言会報』 Revue des patois gallo-romans (1887～92) を著わし，93年にはフランス方言学会を創立。 97年から4年間，E.エドモンの助力を得てフランスを中心に言語調査を行い，『フランス言語図巻』，『補コルシカ島編』 (4巻，1914～15) を著わし，言語地理学を打立てた。その他の著書『「蜜蜂」を表わす単語の系譜』 La généalogie des mots qui désignent l'abeille (18) ，『言葉の病理学と治療学』 Pathologie et thérapeutique verbales (21) など。
