Born: November 14, 1936 in Alicante
[Died] July 20, 2004. Spanish dancer and choreographer. He started dancing at the age of 13, and in 1952 joined the Pilar Lopez Dance Company, where he performed a wide range of dance styles from classical to flamenco. After appearing in the film "The Story of Barcelona" (1963), he formed his own dance company in 1964 and began performing with a repertoire limited to flamenco. With cool and slow choreography, he pioneered a new field different from previous flamenco. He was artistic director of the Spanish National Dance Company from 1978 to 1980. In the 1980s, he produced the films "Blood Wedding" (1981), "Carmen" (1983), and "Love is a Magician" (1985) with film director C. Saura. After retiring in 1991, he returned in 1994.

スペインの舞踊家，振付師。 13歳で踊り始め，1952年ピラール・ロペス舞踊団に入団，古典からフラメンコまで幅広い演技をみせた。映画『バルセロナ物語』 (1963) に出演後，1964年自身の舞踊団を組織し，フラメンコだけにレパートリーを限定して公演活動を開始。クールでかつゆっくりした振り付けで，それまでのフラメンコとは異なる新たな領域を開拓した。 1978～80年スペイン国立舞踊団芸術監督。 1980年代には映画監督 C.サウラとともに映画『血の婚礼』 (1981) ，『カルメン』 (1983) ，『恋は魔術師』 (1985) を制作した。 1991年の引退後，1994年復帰。
