An old town in Mihara County, southern Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. It occupies the center of the Mihara Plain, and is connected to the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge. It is home to the Awaji Kokufu and the remains of the Kokubunji Pagoda (historic site), and has flourished as the center of Awaji since ancient times. It is home to the Bunraku puppet theater known as Awaji Ningyo. Dairy farming and onion cultivation are thriving. In January 2005, it merged with Midori Town, Seidan Town, and Nandan Town in Mihara County to become Minami Awaji City. 58.35 km2 . Population: 16,724 (2003). 兵庫県淡路島南部,三原郡の旧町。三原平野の中央部を占め,本州四国連絡道路が通じる。淡路国府,国分寺塔跡(史跡)などがあり,古くから淡路の中心として栄えた。淡路人形の名で知られる人形浄瑠璃芝居が伝わる。酪農,タマネギ栽培が盛ん。2005年1月三原郡緑町,西淡町,南淡町と合併し市制,南あわじ市となる。58.35km2。1万6724人(2003)。
