A general term for minerals containing cadmium. Examples include greenockite (CdS), monteponite (CdO), otavite (CdCO 3 ) , and cadmoselite (CdSe), but occurrences other than greenockite are rare and unimportant. Greenockite belongs to the hexagonal crystal system, but rarely forms hemihedral crystals. It is usually yellow with a resinous luster and occurs as a powder or earthy coating.
