Born in 1857 in Penang, Malaya.
[Died] 1928. A scholar from Beijing, China, in the late Qing and early Republic of China. Born in Tong'an County, Fujian Province. His given name was Tang Sheng, and his courtesy name was Hongming. Born to overseas Chinese, he graduated from the University of Edinburgh and traveled to Germany, France, Italy, and other countries to study. He served as secretary to Zhang Zhidong, and later became the Left Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After the founding of the Republic of China, he did not take up a government position, instead devoting himself to writing and teaching. He also defended the old Chinese civilization as a restorationist (→restoration movement), and opposed the May Fourth Movement. He came to Japan from 1924 to 1927 and taught at Daito Bunka Gakuin, and after returning to Japan, he became an advisor to Zhang Zuolin. He introduced Chinese civilization through his many books written in English.

中国，清末，民国初期の学者。福建省同安県の人。名は湯生。字は鴻名。華僑の子として生れ，エディンバラ大学を卒業後，ドイツ，フランス，イタリアなどに遊学。張之洞の秘書をつとめ，のち外務部左丞となった。民国成立以後は官途につかず，著述，教育に専念した。また復辟論者 (→復辟運動 ) として旧中国文明を擁護し，五・四運動に反対した。 1924～27年来日して大東文化学院の講師をつとめ，帰国後張作霖の顧問となった。多数の英文著書により，中国文明を紹介した。
