The system of power sharing between Greek and Turkish peoples as stipulated in the 1960 Constitution also collapsed when Vice President Küçük rejected a proposed constitutional amendment proposed by President Makarios in November 1963 as being disadvantageous to the Turkish people, and conflict between the two groups reignited, escalating into armed conflict. In response to the rise of the militant Enosis (reversion to Greece) movement, the Turkish people requested military support from Turkey, and at the same time demanded the withdrawal of all Turkish politicians, civil servants, and military personnel, and the division of the country. In 1964, UN troops were sent in to maintain peace by establishing a buffer zone (the Green Line) between the two ethnic groups. ...

The conflict between the island's Greek residents (approximately 80%) and Turkish residents (approximately 19%) is at the center of the conflict, with Greece and Turkey intervening behind the backs of both groups, and the interests of the United States, Britain, and Russia intertwined over security in the eastern Mediterranean region, creating complex issues. Cyprus had been under the control of the Ottoman Empire since 1571, but became a British colony in 1878, and was officially annexed to Britain in 1925 under the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.
